A gavel is a small mallet used by a judge to signal for attention or order. In this case, Judge Taylor is holding his gavel in his hand but had no need to use it. The courtroom was still; everyone was still in shock at the verdict. The only person who moved was Atticus as he whispered something to Tom Robinson and then both of them left the courtroom; leaving everyone still in silence as they rose.
